    1886 (Jan 1): 2 d. brown-purple and 2½ d. ultramarine, variety overprint in 'blue-black', used on slightly trimmed 1886 registered cover to Hastings each tied by oval 'REGISTERED / GIBRALTAR' datestamps (Feb 26) in black. Reverse with 'Hastings / Station Office' datestamp of arrival (March 3). Despite faults, a very rare in-period commercial registered usage of the first issue, especially so with the 2½ d. variety.rnrnProvenance: Collection Barclays Bank, Phillips, London, 29 May 1987, lot 693.
