Card addressed to Bombay and carried on the 'Isis' and 'Mamora' to Aden, struck on reverse with SEA POST OFFICE / B / BOMBAY-ADEN cds (Sept 24) at Aden and carried by 'Salsette' to Bombay.     Type 12. 1890: Cover to Cairo franked on reverse with 1882/90 3 a. orange tied by 'Bombay' squared circle datestamp (April 25). SEA POST OFFICE / E / 25 AP Intaglio Seal handstamp at right. Carried on the 'Assam' with Suez and Cairo datestamps (May 5) above. Flap torn and some creasing but a truly astonishing cover, one of the very few known strikes of this rare marking, supplied for sealing mail after the bags were packed. Discussed on page 99 of the handbook and illustrated on page 100.

    Framed '5 Cents' Cancel. 1906: Postcard from Mandalay, Burma to Edinburgh underpaid with 1902 ½ a. green tied Mandalay cds (Dec 30). Circular 'T' marking as underpaid ½ anna, struck with Type 8 SEA POST OFFICE / C datestamp (Jan 5, 1907) at Bombay. Carried on 'Persia' and struck with 'rustic' framed 5 / CTS handstamp in black, probably on board. Charged 1 penny due at Foreign Branch on arrival in UK. Rare - just four items are known with this marking, believed to be in use for one day only, see illustration and description in the handbook on page 148.

    Missent 1891: USA 2 c. blue stationery card used from the Smithsonian in Washington DC (Feb 24) addressed to Colombo, India in error; struck on reverse with Type 5 SEA POST OFFICE / A datestamp (March 16) applied at Suez and carried on 'Rome' arriving Bombay March 23. Returned and struck with superb MISSENT IN / INDIAN MAIL in black (Type 1) at Bombay (March 23), with Colombo arrival (March 28). Fine and rare usage (earliest?), illustrated in the handbook on page 127.

    Missent 1892: Germany 5 pf. stationery card up-rated with further 5 pf. green tied by 'Braunschweig' cds addressed to Soro (Denmark). Card was missent to Soro (India) and was struck by SEA POST OFFICE / B datestamps (Type 7) four times: Carried by 'Oriental' (Dec 27) at Suez again on returning 'Oriental' at Bombay (Jan 1, 1893), then the 'Peninsular' (Feb 7) at Aden and lastly carried by the 'Siam' (April 1) at Bombay and the cover mailed on to correct address in Denmark, arriving after a four month journey. Struck with good strike of framed MISSENT IN / INDIAN MAIL in black and also with two Dead Letter Office / Calcutta handstamps. A few to be expected faults, an extraordinary usage.

Carried by the 'Malwa' to Bombay with arrival cds (Oct 8) and then sent back to Aden to pick up the correct ship with superb MISSENT IN / INDIAN MAIL handstamp (Type 1) in black. Thence via Constantinople (June 27) and mis-sorted to Sea P.O. and struck with Type 7 SEA POST OFFICE / C datestamp (July 10) at Aden, thence to Bombay and returned to Aden on 'Siam' with MISSENT IN / INDIAN MAIL handstamp (Type 2) in black. Carried to destination with Hong Kong cds on reverse and Yokohama cds on front. Rare and most unusual.

    Missent 1894: Mozambique 30 r. green on buff stationery card cancelled by oval 'Lourenco Marques' datestamp (May 26) addressed to Baden-Baden, Germany. The card arrived at Aden on June 18, was mis-sorted and carried by the 'Oriental' to Bombay with cds (June 23). SEA POST OFFICE / A datestamp (June 29) applied in Bombay and returned via 'Ganges' and struck with MISSENT IN / INDIAN MAIL (Type 3) in black. Baden-Baden arrival cds (July 17). An attractive and scarce usage with the inverted 'M' error in the handstamp; illustrated in the handbook on page 126.

Opened for display, a fine cover demonstrating the difficulties with Afghanistan's terrain - an Overland journey of 400 miles was slower than a Maritime one of 1'800 miles!

    Registration Type 4. 1904/06: The collection of six covers, all with framed SEA P. O. (ABC) SET handstamps in violet, these examples being particularly well struck for this marking, with SET A used from GB to Bengal on reg'd cover (14 Feb, 1904) and another from GB to Karachi on reg'd cover (23 July, 1905), SET B on cover to India (Sept 19, 1904), and another from GB to India (21 May, 1905), SET C used from Egypt to Persia (17 Jan, 1904) and GB to India with date missing (should be 12 Feb, 1906). A fine group, four are illustrated in the handbook on pages 137 and 138.

    Note: It should be pointed out that Registration Type 4 and Type 5 handstamps were made of rubber. Due to this, the cancellations are never found superbly struck.
