10 bani orange, single example used in conjunction with two strips three (on front and back of cover) with the third stamp diagonally bisected in each, on 1872 registered cover to Vienna. All stamps cancelled GALATZI / SERA datestamps (19/5) in black (Kiriac fig. 460) with both bisects also cancelled in manuscript - as neither bisect was accepted as payment and thus the further single example was applied to pay the correct 50 bani rate. Unframed RECOMMANDÉE / GALATZ handstamp at top with framed 'PD' also on front, reverse with couple of minor opening tears, red wax seal and Vienna arrival cds. A splendid and extremely rare 'double bisect' cover paying the postage (25 bani) and registration (25 bani). Illustrated in Heimbüchler II on page 292. Cert. Heimbüchler (2014).
Provenance: Collection E. J. Leon (Oct 1966), lot 1635.
