3 bani violet, a horizontal pair with scissor cut between stamps, used in combination with horizontal strip of six and vertically trisected 3 bani for the remaining 1 bani due for the 25 bani rate, all on 1872 cover to Vienna and well tied by five strikes of the JASSY single ring datestamp (Feb 23) in black (Kiriac fig. 502). Framed black 'PD' below and reverse showing Vienna arrival cds ((26/2) in black. Addressee's name partially erased, one flap missing and scissor cut between third and fourth stamps in the strip, however these are negligible faults on a cover of great philatelic and postal history importance; one of two known usages of a bisect or trisected stamp used to an external address during the classic period. Signed Friedl. Cert. Heimbüchler (2014).

    Provenance: Collection E. J. Leon (Oct 1966), lot 1524.
