The front panel with red manuscript "Affranchie au dos" and the front panel and adhesive cancelled by Paris "Bureau Centrale / (60" datestamp "1 JANV. 49" in red and lightly tied again on arrival with "Mirepoix" datestamp in black. 'Paris' despatch cds struck in red at left (Aug 9) with London transit alongside in red (Aug 10) and from there via Liverpool on the Cunard Line Steamer 'Canada' to New York.     1861 (June 26): Outer letter sheet from Locle Switzerland, sent via the forwarder Ch. Vignier to Havre, posted there and franked with imperf. Napoleon 40 c. orange (3) and 80 c. rose (3) giving the double weight rate of 360 c. to Peru, tied by dotted numeral mark "1495" with red BUREAU MARITIME HAVRE cds's alongside, endorsed "S. Atrato" referencing to the steam service by the R.M.S.P. steamer S.S. Atrato to Chagres Panama, carried overland across the isthmus (Panama transit cds July 23) and furtheron via Pacific Steamship Company to Lima. All three 40 c. stamps touched by horizontal archive fold, some minor faults in addition but an exceedingly rare cover with a fine appearance.

The strip, with ample to enormous margins all round has been removed from the cover for appraisal and hinged back into place. Reverse with Chaumont arrival (Feb 27).     1870/71: Bordeaux issue 10 c. bistre (report 1), 20 c. blue (type III, report 2), and huge margined 40 c. orange all used on small envelope with original contents written by a sailor on U.S.S.Plymouth written at Ville Franche, mailed from Nice (Feb 13) to Philadelphia, USA via London (Feb 22). Very rare three colour Bordeaux issue usage, also note the time taken between Nice and London due to the turbulent state of Paris just after the Siege-usually a two day journey, this cover taking nine days. '2 Cents' in red at left applied on arrival. A very scarce and attractive cover. Signed Calves. Cert. Vachat (2010).
