Incoming Mail 1882: Great Britain 6 d. grey pl. 18, defective at left corners (Gi 161), tied to 1882 cover to "Ship Berkshire" at Adelaide tied by "Haddington / 17" duplex in black (Dec 23). Found to be double weight with black "1/-" handstamp applied and further struck with framed "DEFICIENT POSTAGE 6d. / FINE 6d. = 1/-" in violet. Adelaide arrival cds also on obverse (Feb 5). 1894: Cover to Gisborne, New Zealand mailed with "MT. GAMBIER" squared circle datestamp (Oct 16), the adhesive floated off the cover and obverse struck with "Saved from the Wreck of the / WAIRARAPA" in blue. Reverse with Auckland (Nov 3) and Gisborne datestamps (Nov 7). A scarce Wreck cover - in foggy conditions the "Wairarapa" crashed into the rocks at the base of a 200 metre high cliffs of Great Barrier Island. The ship tilted to one side and only two lifeboats were successfully launched and 50 people rescued. The rest, some 120 passengers and 65 crew, remained on board being battered by huge waves. A further 50 people were rescued on the following day, taking refuge in the rocks and rescued by Maori's, however there were a total of 155 fatalities. Mounted Rifle Contingent in Cape Colony, South Africa tied by Adelaide duplex (April 4). Handstruck "Recovered from the Mails / Looted by the Boers on June 8" italic handstamp in violet. The cover then forwarded on to London (Aug 11) from the Cape. Postal Stationery 1892: Essay for the 1 d. postal stationery card, the original postcard-sized artwork based on Max Heuzenroder's prize winning entry in the 1890 Design Competition, the card beautifully hand-drawn in India ink, the legend (from another entry) being altered from "Address to be written on this side only" with manuscript "Alter words to Address to be written on this side" and, under stamp with the Duty plate 'Two Pence' blacked out: "alter value to One Penny". 1825 (Jan 29): Entire letter endorsed "O.H.M.S." in manuscript from George Town to Charles Barnard, Rouge Mont, On the Tamar; with circular "GEORGE / TOWN" handstamp in black, further endorsed by sender "Commandant P.D." (Penal Department). The letter is signed by Chas. Cameron, Lt. Col. Commandant. He was appointed commandant of Port Dalrymple on 14 Dec 1822, having arrived in Hobart with three Officers and 50 soldiers, escorting 182 convicts, in November 1821. A fine and rare entire: in this describer's opinion the finer of the two recorded examples (the other was in the Lewis C. Viney collection, lot 1509) of this handstamp. 1839 (Dec 7): Printed Police Pass "Police Office (Royal Arms) Hobart Town" amended in manuscript to "Campbelltown" stating that the bearer (one George Luke) a Prisoner, holding a ticket of leave, has permission to pass this day to search for work in Campbell District only ... and signed off by the Police Magistrate, with the bearer's identification and description on reverse. George Luke was convicted at Somerset Assizes on 6 August 1833 for larceny, sentenced to 7 years transportation arriving in Van Diemen's Land in 1834 on the ship "John Barry". Convicts were allowed to seek work for their own financial benefit (he was a 26 year old blacksmith), this relieved the authorities of the cost of his maintenance. 1844 (Aug 10): Four sides of entire letter from George Town to Yeovil, Somerset written by one William Pelham, rated '5d.' in manuscript for 1 d. internal fee and 4d. for outgoing Ship Letter, and a further '1/8d.' due upon receipt in Yeovil with arrival on reverse (1 Feb 1845). A most interesting letter: "(The Governor, Sir John Eardley-Wilmot) has taken the Labour of the Convict population from the settlers, and under the present probabtion system the prisoners are all let loose and walk about with a slip of paper called a Pass and hiring themselves at not less than ...£9 a year. Manuscript "Buckland 5.9.70" Postmaster's endorsement at left and Hobart "PRE-PAID" datestamp of transit in red. The "via Marseilles" route was closed due to the Franco-Prussian War and the cover was struck with framed "INSUFFICIENTLY PREPAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE 3d." applied in black on arrival (Oct 31).
