Interesting content: "I regret to inform you I am not in a position to honour (your draft) having been involved in the universal commercial panic which has surged this place and Sydney in common with the rest of the Australian Colonies, I have been compelled to stop payment...stock has been greatly depreciated". 1846 (Jan 21/Feb 17): Entire letter from Melbourne to the Naval & Military Gazette in London, endorsed "per first Ship to England", prepaid '3d.' in red manuscript for local rate and charged '8d.' due in manuscript for incoming Ship Letter on arrival. Reverse with oval "MELBOURNE / ♛ / PORT PHILLIP" datestamp (Feb 19), London SHIP-LETTER in black and arrival cds (June 29). Interesting content "We are very anxious for accounts from New Zealand, Col. Defsard had advanced with 700 men of the 58th - 96th accompanied by the Governor....Sir E. Wilmot has formed a new Council and Van D. Land is quieter...Major Cotton has begun to form works for supplying Hobart Town with water....a Mr. Beauvais, Master of the Barque "Kestrel" is to be tried this week for murdering several of his Lascar crew...17 Feby. The New Zealand Chiefs have given in and have surrendered, a grand fight took place on the 11th Jany. when the natives were well thrashed". (this last refers to Kororareka). 1848 (Sept 19): Entire letter from Cecil Pybus Cooke at 'The Pine Hill' (near Harrow) to Wimmera District, rated '1d.' as a drop letter in manuscript, struck on reverse with two superb strikes of oval "BURN BANK / ♛ / PT. PHILLIP" in black (Sept 23 and Sept 26). Displays werll, a fine and rare entire.rnrnNote: Cecil Pybus Cooke (1813-1895) arrived at Portland in mid-1839 and became a prominent pastoralist. His letter asks the Commissioner to visit Pine Hill to confirm disputed boundaries. Reverse with oval "GEELONG / ♚ / PORT PHILLIP" arrival (Sept 10) in black. 1849 (Dec 28): Entire letter from Geelong to Dublin, Ireland locally prepaid and rated '3' in red, reverse with negative intaglio "GEELONG / ♕ / NEW S. WALES" Mailbag Seal used as despatch with manuscript date "31/12/49" inserted, and both London (April 7) and Dublin cds's in red adjacent (April 8, 1850). Honduras" and thence forwarded to Berlin, cancelled by three strikes of "26 / V" Butterfly handstamp in black. '8' (pence) ship letter fee deleted on forwarding, most probably as an enclosure. The "Honduras" left Melbourne on 29 Aug 1851 and arrived in London on 8 January 1852. One of just two recorded pairs of this stamp on letter. Typographed from electrotypes by Samuel Calvert 1857: Emblems 2 d. grey-lilac, no wmk., rouletted 18-19, an unused horizontal pair of outstanding centering for this Trial issue and of lovely colour, minor ironed bend on right hand stamp and surface spot on left stamp mentioned for accuracy only, unused without gum. An exceptional and extremely rare pair - one block of six was discovered (1893) and of these, one stamp is now housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charlöes III. The six stamps are believed to be the sole recorded examples - this pair being the largest multiple extant and the finer of the two known - the other having pinholes where, it is believed, the stamps were adjoined to a document thought to be a submission by Samuel Calvert for consideration of this method of separation. Illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on colour plate 8. Delightful and a great rarity of the Emblems issue. Certs. Five stamps affected by diagonal crease but a remarkable and extremely rare multiple with gum. 1873/75: Essay for the proposed 9 d. value by William Bell, with head plate vignette hand-painted in shades of pink, imperforate on card (59 x 71 mm.), the frame hand-painted in shades of red and reddish-lilac, with the Essay signed "W.B." at base (William Bell) and marked "B" in ink on reverse. 1880/84: Naish 2 d. mauve and 4 d. rose-carmine, used eexample on underpaid 1883 cover to Naples tied by Melbourne duplex (May 9) and struck with triangular "T" marking in black. The cover was carried by the P&O "Carthage" to Colombo, the "Clyde" to Suez and thence from Alexandria by the "Tanjore" to Brindisi. Due to the Cholera epidemic in Egypt delioveries of Mail were refused and the "Tanjore" was directed for fumigation to Poveglia for disinfection near Venice. The mails were then transmitted via Malta (July 5) where slitted and struck with "PURIFIE AU LAZARET / MALTE" to Naples. Underpaid 1d. and taxed on arrival with Italy 1870 Postage Due 10 c. (2) tied in black (July 8). 1870: Essay for Stamp Statute 4 d. value, hand-painted in grey & sepia, with photographic print of hand-drawn head inserted at top, the perforations also hand-drawn, on thin card endorsed "1869" alongside the dated reverse of the Coin to correct the "1870" inscription; dated "17-11-70" on the reverse in ink. The above design was the subject of a letter from William Bell (19 Nov 1870) claiming that the engraving of the 4 d. coin obverse and reverse - required more work than the other values and desrved a 10% increase in his charges of £ 25. The additional payment was approved on 22 Nov 1870. Bell made an error on this handpainted design - which was faithfully copied on to the Die - spelling "BRITANNIA" as "BRITANNIAR". 1885/1895: Error of Colour, 4 d. lilac instead of magenta, the famous fine unused horizontal pair of this rare stamp, issued in error during December 1886, of excellent colour, well centred and with large part og. Trivial imperfections of no significance, an exceptional pair of great rarity, there being but 9 recorded unused examples - this pair being the finest of the two recorded pairs of this error and, indeed, the only horizontal one (the vertical pair is illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on colour plate 15 and is not as fine). No. 6" French Paquebot datestamp (April 20) in red with repeated information strike at left, carried on the "Salazie" to Marseilles via Mauritious, Seychelles, Aden and Suez. Die Proof in pink engraved by Charles Naish, line perforated 12½, affixed to thick brown card (70 x 88 mm.), annotated "2/4/87" in ink on obverse and "RB87/1319" in pencil on reverse. Geoff Kellow RDP in "The Stamps of Victoria" page 269 states that this Proof was requested by the Postmaster General but was rejected due to the similarity of colour with exisitng values.
