Early usage 1849: Cérès 20 c. black on white paper, a fine example with fair to large margins, tied by type 15 "BORDEAUX (32) 4 JANV. 49" cds on the fourth day of the issue to envelope, a clear information strike at left. The cover directed to Le Mas d'Agenais, reverse with arrival cds of the next day. Minor wrinkles and toning, some edge wear and the wax seal torn out of the reverse, nevertheless an appealing cover with the datestamp ideally documenting the early usage. Yvert = € 2'500 / Maury 3 = € 3'450.rnNote: During the two first weeks of January 1849, the cancellation of the newly issued stamps was not well organized. Two circulars by the Postal administration led to confusion in the Post Offices on the methods of obliteration. 1902: Barnum & Bailey, 'The Greatest Show on Earth', the most famous Circus company of the time, two pre-printed envelopes in different designs, probably from a European tour in 1902 from NEUILLY (SEINE) to ZURICH, addressed to the Operationsmanager of the Swiss Railways. The Circus was famous for travelling in its own train, which was also the home to its Artists. In this context a correspondence with railway ops is very plausible and shines a light on the Circus' history. The heavy contents have left minor traces of wear on one envelope, which nonetheless is a great asset to any thematic collection 'Circus'.Ausruf : 150,00 CHFZuschlag : nicht verkauftLosnr. : 477 Frankreich

Ballon Monté 1870 (Sept. 19): Entire letter carried on board of Ballon Monté No. 1 'Le Neptune' to Alcalá de Henares near Madrid, Spain bearing Napoléon laureated 40 c. orange, a fresh and fine example, tied by Étoile de Paris '15' numeral with matching 'R. Bonaparte' despatch cds and boxed PD in red alongside. Reverse with "ALCALA DE HENs / MADRID 28 OCT 70" arrival cds. An amazing item, covers from the 'Neptune' are missing from the most advanced collections of Ballons montés. Maury = € 15'000 for the Neptune + € 5'000 for the destination Spain / Lhéritier = € 18'300 + 4'600. Note: This is the first entire from a most interesting correspondence of six entire letters, written by a wife to her husband and children in Spain, a new find. This item was despatched on September 19, the day the Prussian troups have closed the siège, the letter deals with the mail from Spain which arrived in Paris the day before. It does not show an endorsement 'Ballon Monté' just 'Espagne par Bayonne', because this service and terminology has not been established as the first balloon, the 'Neptune' did not depart earlier than September 23rd. This lack of endorsement is typical for the first balloons.
INFO: ce pli n'a pas été transporté par le Neptune car la date d'arrivée à Madrid du 28 octobre 1870 est beaucoup trop tardive. Nouveau prix de départ: CHF 1'200.- Vendu Tel Quel. (not carried by the Neptune because the arrival date is too late). Offered as is.

1871 (Jan. / March): A most interesting correspondence of four entire letters from a wife to her husband and children, sent in French from different P.O.'s in Paris to Alcalá de Henares nearby Madrid. All are franked with Napoléon laureated 40 c. orange or pair 20 c. blue, tied by Étoile de Paris numerals with boxed PD alongside, all with arrival cds on reverse. The first letter is written on January 29, 1871, the text says "Un armistice ayant été signeé hier, le moment approche où nous pourrons tous être réunis à Passy". The second entire (Feb. 4, 1871) deals with the new Assemblée Nationale to be constituted and the still existing rationing of food in Paris, entires nos. 3 & 4 (Feb. 25 / March 5) describe the ongoing normalisation of life in Paris. A most interesting ensemble full of postal history, a great testimony of these turbulent times, sent directly after the end of the Siège.Ausruf : 500,00 CHFZuschlag : 500,00 CHFLosnr. : 485 Frankreich
