    Spanish Colonial Period 1767 (Nov 21): Entire letter to Domingos Basabilbaso, Manager of the Buenos Aires Branch of the "Empresa Estatal de los Correos Maritimos", struck on obverse with condensed "ESPAÑA" handstamp in red and "3 DE PLATA" handstamps in red applied in Cadiz. Letter docketed internally on arrival "Cartagena de Indias Abril 1768". Extraordinarily rare - the second earliest recorded mail after the 1764 reorganisation of the Postal Regulations.     Spanish Colonial Period 1813 (Nov 19): Entire letter from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro, carried unusually by a British ship and endorsed "p. HMS Hermes" at lower left, prepaid on despatch and struck with straight line "FRANCA" and two line "BUENOS / AYRES" in red (Guinovart & Tizon 5 and 3). Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 99. Superb and rare.rnNote: This was the fourth "HMS Hermes". A 20-gun sixth rate launched in 1811 and burned in 1814 during a highly unsuccessful attack on Fort Bowyer at Mobile Point, Alabama.

Reverse with double arc 'Bath' arrival cds (Feb 10) in black displaying well on flap; rated at '2/7d.' to pay in manuscript (2/5 d. for the Maritime voyage + 1 d. internal charge to Bath + 1 d. Carried on the "Camilla" to Rio and thence on the "Tamar", with London transit and struck there with "GB / 1F 60c.' accountancy marking in black. Calais transit on obverse (March 5), re-weighed on arrival in France and marked "16" (grams) for triple weight and charged '24' décimes handstruck in black. Circular "BUENOS AYRES / PAQ. FR. K. No. 1" datestamp (Aug 12) at right (Salles fig. 1037) and carried on Steamer "Aunis" to Rio, where transhipped to the "Guienne" for the journey to Bordeaux (Sept 19).     South American & General Steam Navigation Co. The line attempted to compete with the RMSP on the South America route with Steamers named Lusitania, Bahiana, Imperador and Pampero. After just four Transatlantic crossings the route was discontinued.rnrnSA&GSN 1854 (Nov 12): Entire letter from Buenos Aires to Paris endorsed at top "p. La Plata" to Rio (RMSP), struck with British P.O. "Buenos Ayres" despatch cds (Nov 12) and thence carried by the "Imperador" to Liverpool with superb strike of rare "SOUTH-AMERN. / PACKET / LIVERPOOL" struck in green (Jan 4, 1855) and displaying well (Robertson P27) on flap. London transit of the following day in red and "Colonies / &c. Art 13" in orange and charge of "1/-" with handstamp in black. Calais transit in red and charged due in Paris with '15' décime mark in black. Rev. Howat listed only four examples recorded of the South American Packet datestamp - which was used only on Mail from this service. A rare marking illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 106 and in 'River Plate Maritime Postal History' by Mario Kurchan on page119.

    On November 1, 1860 prepayment using French adhesive stamps was regulated. rnrnMessageries Impériales 1860 (Nov 14): Entire letter from Buenos Ayres to Barcelona, Spain endorsed "via di Francia" at top, franked by France 1853 80 c. carmine in a horizontal pair, touched to good margins but affected by file folds, tied by dotted Anchor lozenge in blue with corresponding framed "P.P." and octagonal "CONFEDERATION ARGENTINE / *" Consular datestamp (Nov 14) alongside (Salles fig. 1057). Carried on the "Saintonge" to Rio de Janeiro and thence by the "Navarre" to Bordeaux with entry marking "Brésil / Bordeaux" in red (Dec 21). Struck on arrival in Barcelona (Dec 25) with "8 Rs." due in blue. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 107. A very rare entire - the Maiden Voyage of the "Ligne Annexe de Plata", and the earliest recorded Argentinian outgoing letter franked by adhesive Postage Stamps.

Circular "CORR. D. ARM. / LIG. J PAQ. F. NO. 1" datestamp (Aug 26) in black (Salles fig. 1098) and transferred to Paquebot "Rio Grande" for journey to Bordeaux with circular "LIGNE J / PAQ. FR. No. 6" datestamp (Sept 1) struck in blue (Salles fig. 1063), with further strike on reverse.     British Sailor's Concessionary Rate 1864: Cover franked by Great Britain 1 d. red stars, lettered AJ, used on sailor's concessionary rate cover from "Wm. Wiggett "HMS Bombay", South America" to the Sailor's father in London, correctly counter-signed by Commanding Officer below, the adhesive tied on arrival in London by obliterator with London cds on reverse (Jan 2, 1865). Sadly the "HMS Bombay" was destroyed by fire in a freak gunnery accident off Isla de Flores on December 14, 1864 about 15 days after this letter was mailed. 93 lives were lost, amongst them Attendant William Wiggett. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 114. A rare and fine cover, believed to be the sole Naval concession cover recorded from Uruguay.

Carried on the SGTM Steamer "Poitou" and struck with superb impression of octagonal Consular "CONFÉDÉRATION ARGENTINE / *" datestamp (Nov 20) at left (Salles fig. 1058). Adhesives, one with fault when overlapped at right, also tied by Marseille entry marking (Dec 23) in red. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 116. The entire slit for disinfection on landing at Genova where struck with "Vapori transatl." handstamp in black. Havre arrival cds (April 6) on reverse of an extremely rare cover.
