Reverse with oval framed CAPE TOWN despatch datestamp (May 3) in red alongside embossed seal of 'His Excellency the Governor Cape of Good Hope'. Rare and very fine, a delightful cover. Cert. Provisional Issue 1861 (April 12): Woodblock 4 d. deep bright blue on laid paper, an unused example with large margins all round and close but well clear at lower right, of fine impression (almost over-inked) and in an astonishing rich colour, tiny thin spot on the top of 'G' of GOOD mentioned for absolute accuracy and not impinging on the appearance in any way; fresh and very fine, unused without gum. Similar in inking and shade to the other known unused example which was ex Riesco and Dale-Lichtenstein (lot 381), currently housed in the collection of Joseph Hackmey RDP. This example turned up in a general collection in the early 1960's, found by Robin Taylor of London & Brighton Auctions which he ran with Ted Proud, it remained in his estate until 1990. A magnificent example of this extremely rare stamp, with just two unused examples known. A world rarity of classic philately. Cert. 'Cape Town / Cape Colony' circular datestamp at right (July 1) and reverse with oval framed SIR LOWRY'S-PASS despatch in black (June 31, sic) and STELLENBOSCH arrival in black. A fine and rare cover, the contents are a monthly report, referring to the hire of a fellow road-worker and stating that 400 yards of road at the Pass had been recoated that month. Mount Coke was near King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape, where a Methodist missionary building had been destroyed in the Kaffir Wars in 1839 and was later rebuilt. Tiny nick in margin only, well away from the design. An extremely rare multiple - this being the sole multiple recorded of this rarity. An extraordinary item, one of the key pieces of the Cape. 1880 (Aug): Provisional '3' on 3 d. pale dull rose, Type I, a used example showing the broken '3' in surcharge in pair with normal in combination with 1882 2 d. bistre on 1884 cover to Hannover, Germany tied by 'Cape Town / Cape Colony' squared circle datestamps (July 23) in black. '2½d.' split rate marking in red at right. Reverse with London cds and Hannover arrival (Aug 14) and showing fine embossed seal of the 'SMS Leipzig' in grey. A scarce cover, the broken '3' in surcharge occurs just once on the sheet of 240 stamps, in the lower row adjoining the Plate number.
