1854c: The original Essay engraved by William Humphrys, prepared by Perkins, Bacon & Co. for the printing contract, showing the half-length Chalon portrait of Queen Victoria on engine-turned diagonally cross-hatched background with ornamental circular surround, State 1 without the circular frame-line dividing the portrait from the backgriound, printed in black on India paper (65 x 50 mm.) and mounted on soft wove card (88 x 74 mm.). 1855: Perkins Bacon 2 d. dull blue, imperforate on blued paper, wmk. Large Star, a fine used example with ample to large margins all round with portion of adjoining stamp at base, used on 1856 entire letter from Wellington to London, endorsed at upper left "per Talcahuano" (Chile) and confirming the Pacific route taken with this mail. The adhesive in a bright resonant shade lightly tied by '10' numeral obliterator with reverse showing 'Wellington / New Zealand' cds in black (February 19) and London arrival cds (May 17) in red where charged '2s.' due in manuscript. Minor file folds sensibly reinforced internally, but a very rare and important entire - the sole occassion when Mail was transmitted via Chile during the Chalon era. an exhibition item. Cert. Large Star, a magnificent horizontal pair with ample to huge margins all round and portion of adjoining stamps at top and at left, neatly cancelled by central '10' obliterator of Wellington in black. 1855/58: Richardson printing 1 s. green, imperforate on blued unwatermarked paper, the magnificent vertically bisected example (right half) used on 1858 cover to Dublin, Ireland to pay the 6d. single rate, lightly tied by '18' numeral obliterator of Otago. The adhesive with large margins on the three sides, the small envelope with fine "Otago / New Zealand" despatch cds on reverse (Dec 27) in black with 'Dublin' arrival adjacent (April 1) in blue. A splendid example of this rare usage, #20 of the 26 recorded examples in the Gerald Elliott census. An exceptional cover for the connoisseur. Certs. Reverse with 'Otago / New Zealand' despatch cds (June 28) in black and Edinburgh arrival (Sept 20) alongside. File folds affect the adhesives but a very rare franking for the 6d. single rate. Cert.
