    1857/61: Washington 12 c. black, single and horizontal strip of four on cover from New Orleans to Vienna/Austria all tied by New Orleans cds's in black; adhesives with some trimmed perforations, struck with "N.YORK-14-BR.PKT.PAID" (Sept 1) in red on front alongside "AACHEN FRANCO" framed in red (14/9). Reverse with Vienna arrival. Despite the minor imperfections, a very rare 60 cent franking.

    1861/66: Black Jack 2 c. used on 1863 Printed Matter entire letter to Intra, Italy tied by circular target handstamp in black with "New Orleans" cds at right (Aug 26) of despatch.     1866: Covers with complete contents (2) from the Consulate General of Switzerland in Washington DC., each sent stampless and carried free as far as New York as Consular Mail, thence by "Hamburg" or "Bremen" Steamer, one cover at single rate with "3 / N. YORK HAMB. PKT." in black and handstruck "22" (kreuzers) in black  alongside "4½ Sgr. / 6 Xr." applied in Hamburg in transit (Van Der Linden fig. 3265, latest recorded usage) and thence via Frankfurt to Winterthur; second larger cover at double rate struck with "6 / N.YORK BREM. PKT." and blue "AMERICA / ÜBER BREMEN" with large "44" (Kreuzers) in same ink below (Van Der Linden figs. 115, 3196, latest recorded use). A fine and rare pair that display well.

    1928 (April 15): Non-stop flight Alaska/USA to Spitzbergen/Norway by Hubert Wilkins and Carl B. Eielson - envelope franked with 2 c. carmine tied by violet "Point Barrow Apr. 14 1928 Alaska", showing two line "SVALBARD/RADIO" handstamp alongside, signed and dated "Hubert Hilkins April 21st 1928" and "Carl B. Eielson" on front, on reverse Reg.No: 000052. Touching the most northern point of the Atlantic (Grant Land) 3'500 km over unknown waters, they landed after 29 hrs in Spitzbergen, where the special cachet of the Radio Station was applied. Cert. Cover franked with three US values tied by "Miami FLA 4. Feb. 1929" machine cancel and duplex, together with two adhesives of 1923/28 Scadta "EU" overprinted 15 c. carmine, cancelled by boxed first flight special cachet and showing Cartagena transit cds of Feb. 8th on front as well as Cristobal (Feb. 6) and Guayaquil (Feb. 17) arrival mark on reverse.     1930 (Aug. 2): First Non-Stop flight New York to Newfoundland by Mears and Brown - Specially printed  1c. stationery card uprated with special delivery 10 c. violet and cancelled "East Orange NJ Aug 1 1930" with "Harbour Grace Au 2 30 NEFW'D" arrival mark alongside. They attempted to beat the around the world record, but crashed when taking off at Harbour Grace. An additional print was applied on the reverse announcing the record flight within 8 hours and 5 minutes to Newfoundland, signed by John Henry Mears (only 25 items recorded) Muller 321 = 30'000 points.

    1931 (May 24): Hillig and Hoiriis Transatlantic Flight -  Airmail envelope franked with 2 c. red tied by "Liberty N.Y. May 24 1931/4.30PM" duplex, flown to Harbour Grace/Newfoundland and mailed then to Copenhagen by boat, receiving on arrival  25 öre blue cancelled "Köbenhavn 3.7.31", signed on front by the pilots. They carried considerable mail but were forbidden by the Postal Authorities at Newfoundland to carry it across the Atlantic Muller 339 = 5'000 points/AACM 1140.

    1934 (May 13): Attempted New York to Rome flight by Pond and Sabelli, envelope to Rome franked with 8 c. olive tied by Brooklyn N.Y. duplex of Oct. 17 (1933) with same cancellations of Jan 5 (1934) and May 13 alongside, crashed making a forced landing at Leact ui Concubair/Ireland with cds of May 15 and Rome arrival of June 11, signed by Pond and Sabelli, fine Longhi 3110//34RNa = € 700.

    Admiral Byrd's Antarctic Expedition 1928/30: Choice collection of 9 envelopes, 4 picture postcards and original documents, all nicely mounted on album pages with description, including envelope signed by Bernt Balchen (Pilot) and Francis Coman MD from South Pole Flight with special cachet "South Pole Air Mail" and Ship cancel "S.S. City of New York Feb 19 1930", Souvenir envelope "Welcome Admiral Byrd on return from South Pole June 19 1930" bearing all signatures of the crew flying to the South Pole as Byrd, Balchen, McKinley and H.J. June, further mail from 'Little America, Bay of Whales Antarctica", lettersheet 'Warm Greetings from a Cold Country" signed by the members of the expedition plus an original typescript dated Waltham Mass. Aug. 11 1926 to Henry Woodhouse Aerial League of America in New York: " ... that I will be unable to go to the Exchange Club at Atlantic City ... I have not yet had any real rest ... after the two Arctic Expeditions in so short time." Viewing recommended.
