    Crimean War 1855 (June 25): Entire letter to John Drummond in London rated «3» pence in manuscript and with POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY cds, code B, in black on reverse. Content including «If we winter here and hold Kaffa and Arabat the Russians will find their transport difficult ... the utter failure (of or leaders) has somewhat damaged us all». A fine entire.

    Crimean War 1855 (July 6): Entire letter from Balaklava to Bromley sent unpaid and rated «3» pence in manuscript. Reverse with smudged POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY code B cds in black. Interesting contents with «poor Raglan died of Cholera ... very much depressed about the failure on the 18th (a repulsed attack on Sevatopol) ... his coffin was carried on a platform I had mounted on one of my guns ... the road was lined for 7 miles by Troops on each side». A fascinating entire.

    1855/57: 4 d. carmine on deeply blued highly glazed paper, wmk. Small Garter, a superb pair used on 1856 cover to Bordeaux tied by '61' Scottish numeral of Buckie and by Calais entry marking (Feb 21) in black. A fresh and fine cover with the stamps in a marvellous shade. Cert. BPA (2007).

    1863 (Dec 16): Cover franked by 1862/64 1 s. green pl. 1, tied by London/73 duplex mailed to Dutch Flat, Placer County, California endorsed per Steamer 'Atrato' via Southampton, erroneously struck with large DUE 6 handstamp in black, the Due marking deleted by three strikes of the circular target handstamp in black with faint red 'San Francisco' cds (Jan 31) and fine black cds at right (Feb 1, 1864). Cover slightly trimmed at right but an unusual usage.
