Crimean War 1855 (July 6): Entire letter from Balaklava to Bromley sent unpaid and rated «3» pence in manuscript. Reverse with smudged POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY code B cds in black. Interesting contents with «poor Raglan died of Cholera ... very much depressed about the failure on the 18th (a repulsed attack on Sevatopol) ... his coffin was carried on a platform I had mounted on one of my guns ... the road was lined for 7 miles by Troops on each side».
