MIGL. / DEL MESQUITE in black. Reverse with '2' (reales) Mexican handstamp in black alongside circular MINISTERE DE LA GUERRE 'Eagle' cachet in blue, presumably applied as a Censor marking to the letter between Paris and the Prisoner of War Camp in Bourges. Fascinating contents regarding the War and the whereabouts of weapons formerly controlled by the prisoner when he was in Pueblo de Saragoza, where the Republicans had just won a 'bloody battle'...'the Revolution continues in Guanajuato, Léon, Aguascalientes and San Luis (Potosi)...General Fraga suffered a defeat at Jalisco and it is known that Negrete and Mejia had a bloody battle in San Luis with 2-3'000 deaths on both sides and plenty of Prisoners of War....very soon we will have the support of the Americans...' this latter remark prescient and true but the Civil War still raged North of the border. Remarkably this is the sole recorded Prisoner of War cover from the 'Maximilian' Campaign in Mexico. An historic Postal History rarity. Signed Todd AIEP.
