    1861, 'Cancelled' Stamps for Rowland Hill’s Nephew Ormond Hill.rnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property.     Chalons 1860/61: 1 d. carmine-rose, wmk. Small Star, rough perf. 14-16, a horizontal pair, small imperfections, used on 1862 cover to Dalby, tied by "87" numeral obliterator of Ipswich. Reverse with Ipswich despatch (Aug 1, 1862), Drayton transit (Aug 2) and Dalby arrival cds (Aug 4) all in black. Obverse showing DALBY cds (Oct 6) and held there until February 16, 1863 (double arc cds on reverse). The cover, then sent to the Dead Letter Office as unclaimed. Struck on obverse with oval framed "ADVERTISED" (Feb 28, 1863) and "UNCLAIMED" (March 28) in black - the earliest recorded dates of use of both these markings: clearly struck on the last working day of each month and therefore lists were presumably published at the P.O. regarding these 'missing' letters. Struck on arrival with circular "MORE TO PAY" in black and charged '4d.' due in manuscript (without a fine). Reverse with Brisbane despatch on reverse (April 5) and London transit cds (June 5).     Sideface 1890/94: 2 d. blue, a single example used on 1894 printed cover for "Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science" to Port Chalmers, New Zealand tied by "215" barred numeral obliterator with "South Brisbane" despatch cds adjacent (Oct 20). Struck with two line "Saved from the wreck of the  / WAIRARAPA" in violet. Reverse with Sydney, Auckland and Port Chalmers datestamps. A scarce Wreck cover - in foggy conditions the "Wairarapa" crashed into the rocks at the base of a 200 metre high cliffs of Great Barrier Island. The ship tilted to one side and only two lifeboats were successfully launched and 50 people rescued. The rest, some 120 passengers and 65 crew, remained on board being battered by huge waves. A further 50 people were rescued on the following day, taking refuge in the rocks and rescued by Maori's, however there was a total of 155 fatalities.     1844 (July 11): Entire letter from Adelaide rated '6d.'  prepaid in red and '5d.' in black manuscript for amount due upon arrival, struck on reverse with oval framed "♚ / GENERAL POST OFFICE / ADELAIDE / S.A." datestamp (July 11) in black. Interesting content concerning selling 1'300 sheep at 5/6d. per head and "I have just received a letter from Robert (Leake) where he says he has settled at a place called Lake Leake, he has had an attack by the Blacks twice losing 50 of the sheep, shooting one black and wounding another...several copper mines found also lead mines...". A fine entire.rnrnNote: The entire was written by Robert Leake, son of John Leake (1780-1865), who arrived with his family in Van Diemen's Land in May 1823 on the 'Andromeda'.     1861, 'Cancelled' Stamps for Rowland Hill’s Nephew Ormond Hill.rnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B.     Recess by Perkins Bacon 1855: Prepared for use but Unissued - Perkins Bacon 1 s. violet, wmk. Large Star, imperforate, an unused example with ample to large margins all round, minor corner bend at lower right corner not detracting from the appearance. Considered too close in colour to the issued 6 d. value, all the few examples of this stamp (incl. the six Ormond Hill "Cancelled" examples) are originally from a block of 24 left over and found after the balance of these stamps were destroyed on 5 June 1857 in the presence of the Assistant Treasurer and Auditor General. From the eighteen stamps, four are in institutional collections and Michael Blake and Tony Presgrave located the whereabouts of 15 examples, leaving eleven in private hands. What must also be pointed out is that none of these 24 stamps ever actually reached South Australia. An exceptionally rare stamp and a British Commonwealth and Australasian rarity. Cert.
