    The Postmaster General, Josiah Thomas (served in this capacity from1908-11), announced a public design competition would be held to obtain suitable designs for the new Australia postage stamps. The announcement was made, along with the rules for the competition in the Australian Gazette on January 21, 1911. Designs were received from 533 entrants at the closing date on May 31, with 1051 designs proferred anonymously, competing for a £100 first prize and two further prizes of £50.     1913: De La Rue Die Proof for the 1 d. value printed in grey-black on stamp sized glazed thick card paper (25 x 32 mm.) with black surround, Stage 9, with design completed including addition of AUSTRALIA and POSTAGE with head on horizontally lined background, Wattles completed but with spur on head and back of head retouched. Rare and splendid Proof, Perkins Bacon sub-contracted the work to De La Rue (as apparent from these Proofs which were sold from their archives in 1976); this Proof being on the glazed white card is typical of their Die Proofs produced for Great Britain and the Commonwealth. The progressive Proofs were then returned to Perkins Bacon for inspection and completion. Unique. Cert.     1919: First Aerial Post blue perforated vignette with India ½ a. green and 1 a. carmine, used on First Flight cover from India to Australia flown by Ross and Keith Smith, the cover addressed to Melbourne, tied by oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL / GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA / RECEIVED" datestamp (26 Feb 1920) with information strike at right and three line "PER / VICKERS "VIMY" AEROPLANE / TO AUSTRALIA" in watery violet. The cover is signed by the co-Pilot "Keith Smith" at upper left and is one of very few picked up en route in India. A great rarity and without doubt one of the finest Ross Smith Flight covers recorded.rnrnNote: In 1919 the Australian government offered a prize of £A10,000 for the first Australians in a British aircraft to fly from Great Britain to Australia.
