    1844c.: Local entire letter addressed to "Ma Misi Taluali at Falealili" care of Rev. G. (George) Stallworthy, a member of the London Missionary Society who first arrived in Tahiti in March 1834 and thereafter, in February 1844 he joined the Samoan Mission at Falealisi, Upolu, Samoa and was later in the New Hebrides Islands between May and August 1858. Shocking contents: "Leaumrega, wed. ½ past 10 am, Dear Henry, Mr. Heath is dead and I am grievous beyond expression. It is for me to add that he committed suicide. This awful affair took place at Sapapatu last night. He cut his throat with his razor in the little house between 7 and 8 in the evening...". A rare and early local entire, together with poorly folded local entire letter written in Samoan from Lifu to Malua carried by hand.

    1931/32: Lou Reichers Atlantic Attempt Newark - Harbourg Grace - (Dublin - Paris) with his Lockheed Altair NR998Y, named 'Miss The Liberty", to beat Charles Lindbergh's record time with a crash landing 50 miles off the Irish coast. Souvenir cover from Newark (May 12 1931) signed by Lou Reichers, grouped with many newspapers clips, oringinal photographs of the plane and Lou Reichers. Of the twenty planes attempting transatlantic record flights from Harbour Grace between 1927 and 1936, only the Liberty was successfully rescued at sea.

Envelope returned to USA 1934 and saved from the American Airline crash while landing at Buffalo N.Y., December 19,1934 en route from Newark to Chicago with special cachet on reverse: "DAMAGE DUE TO / AIR MAIL INTERRUPTION / AT / BUFFALO NY DEC 19 1934" in violet.     1916: 10c blue Peking print, vertical pair on registered letter from PEKING via HARBIN to MOHO. The letter was undeliverable, opened and resealed by three intact russian wax seals, with three cachets and a signature set beside. The reverse also bears an IGNASHINO arrival mark, a return transit HARBIN is dated 2. MAR 1917. A most unusual letter from this interesting area and period.

    1941: Two postcards from the same correspondence from 'Shanghai' to 'Vienna', one dated 13. May 1941, the second 24. Sep.1941. Due to the outbreak of war between Germany and Russia the second card could not be forwarded via Siberia but was despatched via the Dutch Indies. The item was held there and following the Japanese Occupation, it was released and forwarded. Remarkable that it was transported at all, as but the Wehrmacht censor proves that it reached Germany despite of the difficult circumstances. According to the recipients endorsement the item was in transit for eight month. Historically a most interesting lot.

    1852 (June 28): Entire letter from Gavlan, Dodangeh Rural District, Hurand District, Ahar County, East Azerbaijan Province, Persia written by the American Missionary Mary Susan Rice (serving in Persia between 1847-1864) to Miss Mary Child in Lincoln, Mass., USA, endorsed "Ship" at lower left. Carried outside the Mails and handed into the Post upon arrival with "BOSTON / MASS." circular datestamp (Nov 29) in black, straight line "SHIP" and charge marking "7" (cents) all in black. The letter with much social content - "pray for woman here, as ignorant & degraded - thank God for increasing encouragements, we have to labor for their spiritual good...", Rice also discusses meeting Rev. and Mrs. Perkins, the Stoddards and Mitchells (all three couples are on the Missionary listing), teaching and reading letters from a further missionary in Erzerum. An extremely rare entire letter.rnNote: Just 44 American Missionaries served in Persia between 1835 and 1870 (a full listing accompanies the lot), of these 24 were female.
