Postal Notice 1840 (April): The magnificent Edinburgh Postal Notice with vertical pair of 1 d. intense black, pl. 1A, lettered MH-NH, four margins all around, the lower stamp with horizontal crease, the upper stamp in wonderful fresh condition, on notice which is, as usual, creased both vertically and horizontally and with minor scissor cut into base of lower stamp. From the very few recorded Postal Notices (all except one originate from the Edinburgh Post Office), three bear vertical pairs from the 'M' and 'N' rows of the 1 d. black (letterings MD-ND, MF-NF and MH-NH). These Postal Notices from the Edinburgh P.O. were from the original 1840 distribution to all branch Offices announcing the introduction of the world's first postage stamp. Two of these were found prior to 1899 and were amalgamated with a contemporary find of "envelopes and stamps" in the Dublin G.P.O. (the "Dublin Find") and this particular Notice is illustrated on page 45 of "The Dublin Find". Minor ageing but of great rarity and a delightful Exhibition piece. Provenance: Stanley Gibbons Auctions, 11-12 September, 1980, lot 54.
