1859: Official cover and complete original contents from the Admiralty Office in London addressed to "Dr. Livingstone, Zambesi Expedition, Central Africa" and endorsed "Admiralty 19 Nov, 1859" at lower left and "To be forwarded by first opportunity" at top, written by Admiral Washington who was supervising the construction of the "Pioneer" steamer for Livingstone's use. This letter further states "I hope this (the "Pioneer") will leave England on April 1...and she will arrive in Tete". It is probable this letter was received by Dr. Livingstone in Tete or at Quelimane. Some staining as to be expected but a rare cover to this extraordinary expedition, one result of this trip being the later publication of "Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries" where he first recounted the use of quinine to combat Malaria.rnNote :The letter mentions that the proposed vessel would be 100 feet in length with a 14 ft. beam and a draft of just 3 foot with a guaranteed speed of 10 knots. The "Pioneer" eventually arrived from England on 31 January 1861 but the draft of 3 feet, perfect for river use was increased to 5 feet in order for the vessel to arrive by sea: thus she was not quite the vessel required when delivered.rnrnProvenance: Collection John Michael.
