Frederick III (1609-1670) King of Denmark and Norway (1648/70): Royal Lettersheet 2 1/2 p. written in German Language, signed and dated Copenhagen 20. Septembris Anno 1658, addressed to the Archbishop of Trier/Germany concerning the Siege of Copenhagen by Swedish troops (August 1858): "Wir haben in denen von dem Könige (Charles X Gustave) ... abgelassene Schreiben wahrgenommen, dass derselbe nicht vergnüget, unss wider aller Völcker rechte, auch den zue Roeschild (Treaty of Roskilde) am 26. February jetztlauffenden Jahrs ... und den Schwedischen Reichs Räthen mit Handt und Siegel bestätigten Friedensschluss, feindtlich zu überfallen." Seal missing, but a historically important letter with full transcription included. On August 11, 1658 Charles X and his forces reached Valby hill (Frederiksberg) from where they could overlook the Danish capital. That same day the city gates were closed and would not open again for another 22 months. A Swedish fleet of 28 ships blocked the harbor. The Dutch Republic joined the conflict on the Danish side and a reinforcing fleet managed to smash its way through the Swedish naval forces in Øresund.
