  • Lot# : 4197 Mexico

    1 / 1
Guanajuato 4 r. black on yellow, vertically bisected and 2 r. black on rose, vertically bisected; used on famous 1861 cover from Guanajuato to Mexico City to pay the 3 reales rate; tied by circular FRANCO / GUANAJUATO datestamp (Schatzkes fig. 476) in blue (May 4). Both stamps are from the first delivery of the 1861 issue to Guanajuato (2'070 of the 2 reales, 660 of the 4 reales) as by this date all the 1 real stamps had also run out (just 1'073 were sent), thus the 4 reales remaining were bisected to 'save' the few remaining 2 reales values. A truly exceptional and wonderful cover in the foremost quality - possibly the most attractive 'Split' cover known. Cert. Jaretzky (1983).

Provenance: Collection Renato Mondolfo, Corinphila sale 70 (May 1984) lot 3275.
