St. Louis 'Bear'. 1846: 5 c. black on grey lilac paper, used example with large margins on three sides and imperceptibly touched at upper left corner, slight ironed diagonal crease, cancelled in manuscript and by part red circular datestamp. The stamp shows 'Spur on 'S' of 'Post' variety. An extremely fine example of this great classic rarity. Cert. RPS (2008) and Philatelic Foundation (1980) Scott = $ 55'000.
