The Mullingar Cross with its characteristic numerous cuts, espcecially in the outer cross, is recorded to be used from September 1840. The Karl Louis Card Index has records of only three items with the Mullingar Cross struck in red (one 1d. Mulready and two 1d. Penny Blacks). The Mullingar distinctive Maltese Crosses struck in red is the rarest of all distinctive Crosses on a Penny Black and among the major philatelic rarities for British and especially Irish Postal History!
