    1 d. black, plate 6, DG, clear to large margins, tied by a fine strike of the distinctive MANCHESTER 'fish tail' Maltese Cross to front (slightly reduced in size) and part back, red 'MANCHESTER MR 4 1841' c.d.s. for dispatch on reverse, to Preston. The local Manchester Cross is recorded to be used from March 2, 1841 for a short period of only slightly over 3 month. It was withdrawn from use when two additional 'normal' crosses were sent to Manchester on 12 June 1841. Rare on a Penny Black and  the third earliest recorded day of use! Listed in 'Encyclopaedia of the Maltese Cross', Rockoff & Jackson (2008), vol. 2 page 195, B.P.A. cert. (1989), Gi = GBP 4'500.
