    1851 (Nov 15): Cover addressed to American Ship "Alliance" in Le Havre, with bold "Wiscasset/Me." despatch cds and endorsed "Paid to New York/Charge Box 15" at lower left and "Steam Ship "Canada" via New York & Liverpool" at top, annotated as "5 cts Paid" in manuscript. Circular "Etats-Unis Am. Serv./Paris" in red on front (Dec 4) and London transit on reverse. Small faults but rare: the earliest date of use possible for the 1851 Decree rates which were effective from December 1, 1851.
