    1915 (March 19): De La Rue Essays (4) all utilising the 3 m. value on thick card (114 x 88 mm.), being composite photographic Essays and touched up to reduce the size of the 1902 issue to the eventually issued 1921 small format; with the first marked "A" with "Design border brown, centre black" below Essay in brown & grey touched upin Chinese white; "B" with similar design but SUDAN POSTAGE horizontal and hand-painted in Chinese white; "C" in medium format with printed brown frame and design "D" with brown vignette and SUDAN POSTAGE horizontal, again with some elements of hand-painting to retouch. The designs were turned down as the photographic process lost the vignette's definition. Illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 6158.
