1841: 1 d. red-brown on blued, plate 24, lettered IF-IG, a used former horizontal pair with large margins all round, used on 1843 double rate cover to Melrose cancelled by Maltese Crosses in black; with framed "PAID / 6d. / EXTRA" in red below as late fee allowing the letter to be included in the mail just prior to despatch. Rare and most attractive cover and the only recorded 1d red double franking showing the paid late fee, together with an 1841 1 d. red-brown on blued, plate 29, lettered IF, a used example with touched to large margins showing portion of adjoining stamp at base, used on 1843 cover to Melrose tied by Maltese Cross in black; with framed "PAID / 1d. / EXTRA" in red below - the additional 1d. allowing the sender to include the letter in the Mail one hour after closing time.
