Lot# 3561 - Auction 298-307

  • Lot# : 3561 Great Britain

    1 / 1
1840: 1 d. black, plate 4, lettered SE, a used example, close  to large margins all round, faint horizontal crease, used on 1840 entire letter from Burslem to Newcastle under Line, neatly tied by Maltese Cross in red to the reverse of the cover. Upon arrival, the Postal Clerk did not see the adhesive and thus marked the obverse with a handstruck "2" charge mark for an unpaid letter. On turning the cover he saw the stamp; the "2" was deleted and the clerk wrote "Stamped on back" alongside. A most unusual cover. BPA certificate (1996).
