    1840: 1d. black, the "OLD ORIGINAL" Die I, Proof printing on thin wove paper, few minor thins along top margin, otherwise fine. The original die was used to provide roller dies for the laying down of the One Penny steel plates from 1840 until 1855. Later the "1" and the words "OLD ORIGINAL" were engraved. The 1870 die print was made after 4'000 steel impressions had been taken from the die. According to Robson Lowe, just "twelve such proofs were made".
