Lot# : 731 Italian Post abroad
Italian Post Offices, Egypt 1871 (Oct 28): Cover from Alexandria to Paris, endorsed "par bateau italien", bearing Italian definitive issue 1867 Torino printing 20 c. 'azzuro chiaro', a fine and fresh example, tied by light '234' numeral obliterator with matching "ALESSANDRIA D'EGGITO POSTE ITALIANE" despatch cds and framed "FRANCOBOLLO INSUFFICIENTE" handstamp, both in black as well as French Lanslebourg entry cds in blue alongside. Taxed with manuscript '4' décimes upon arrival. A most interesting cover full of postal history content sent from the Italian P.O. in Alexandria to France. Cert. Colla (2021) Zanaria = € 6'000.rnNote: Mail with Italian services to France via the Italian homeland is extremely rare as there was an effective French service from Alexandria to Marseille. The Italian service to France gained some importance during and after the Franco-Prussian War when French shipmail services were reduced. These covers could only sent partially prepaid with 20 centesimi for 15 gr. until embarkation, while the residual journey had to be paid by the receiver with 100 centimes. In this case, however, the cover was taxed with only 40 centimes, as it was regarded to come from Italy proper.rnReference: Zanaria & coworkers - Catalogo storico-postale dei francobolli in uso negli uffici postale italiani all'estero 1852-1890, depicted and described on page 244/245.Starting bid : 750.00 CHFHammer price : not sold
