1899 (April 20): Essay by Henry Barr for the proposed 5 d. value in black ink and Chinese white on buff card paper (211 x 170 mm.) in close to the issued design, from photograph and submitted to the Agents General on May 4, 1899 despite the fact that the latter had only asked for a quotation on costs for their production. Six of the eight scenic views shown in the Pictorial issue were sourced from photographs taken by John Watt Beattie. From this Essay, photographs were taken to reduce the image to stamp size onto a blank Master Die for the engraver to follow as a guide. The engraver is believed to have been Leonard Philips at De La Rue as the Die Proofs were sold from his estate in 1975. An extraordinary and unique Essay.
