    Ballon monté 1870 (Sept 29): Small lettercard without endorsement "Par ballon monté", carried on board of balloon no. 3 'Les États-Unis' to Cowes, Isle of Wight, franked with Napoléon laureated 10 c. bistre type I, three fresh single adhesives, all with pre-use shortening of the perforation on their right side, tied by Étoile de Paris '34' obliterator with Paris Avenue Josephine despatch cds and framed PD in red alongside. Reverse with "COWES OC 3 70" arrival cds. Maury = € 775 + 2'500 for the rare destination.rnNote: An exceptional rare and appealing item to an elusive destination. As there was no special postcard rate to the United Kingdom at that time, the 30 c. letter rate of 30 c. introduced in July 1870 was used to pay the journey.rnProvenance: Collecton Gilbert.
