    1872: De La Rue artist's composite Essay for the 48 c. value (issued in rose), imperforate on thick card with head-plate in pale sepia taken from the 1867 De La Rue 1 d. or 3 d., the surround with "Ceylon" and "Postage" hand-painted in deep brown and Chinese white, the frame and superb scrolling with "Forty Eight Cents" hand-painted in paler brown.
