    1854 (Jan 18): Cover from Massa to Ferrara in the Papal States, bearing Carta a mano 5 c. yellow-ochre and 10 c. grey-black, both in type I, two fine and fresh examples with good ro large margins, tied by MASSA two-line datestamp (Sassone RO = 4 punti). Reverse struck by "S.M. MADDALENA 18 GEN" transit datestamp at the border to the Papal States and FERRARA arrival (Jan 19) cds. A fresh cover with this patriotic franking paying the rate in the first rayon of the LEGA postal treaty. Signed E. Diena Sassone = € 1'500+ / Ferchenbauer = € 1'100+.
