    1862: Entire letter from Marseille to Napoli dated inside "Marseille le 15. Avril 1865", bearing Napoléon perf. 40 c. orange, a fresh and fine example with vivid colour, good perforation, tied by Italian "NAPOLI 18 APR 65 8 M" cds (Salles fig. 697), "PIROSCAFI - MERCANTILI / ESTERO (Salles fig. 692) handstamp in red alongside. Reverse with another Napoli strike and two distribution handstamps. A fine Shipmail entire Salles = RR.rnReference: Salles - La Poste Maritime Française Tome I, p. 182/183.rnNote: Franked correctly at the Italy rate in France and brought with a mercantile vessel to Naples, where the stamp was cancelled upon arrival at the Post Office. An early usage of this type of Napoli datestamp.
