    Catalogue# : V22 + Egypt 14
Egypt, Austrian consular Agency in Alexandria 1870 (April 4): Cover from Cairo to Trieste, bearing Egypt 1867 Penasson 1 pi. red (Gi 14, rounded corner) paying the journey from Cairo to Alexandria and tied by "POSTE VICEREALI EGIZIANE CAIRO 4 APR 66" cds. This was combined with Austrian Levant 1864 Arms 10 s. blue paying the onward journey with the Lloyd vessel to Trieste, the adhesive tied by a light "ALEXANDRIEN 4 / 4" cds (Tranmer fig. 5, error in day slug). Reverse with "POSTE VICEREALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 5 APR. 66" transit and oval "TRIEST 11 / 4" arrival datestamp in red. Light horizontal file fold well away from the franking, nevertheless an exceptionally rare combination cover of Egypt and Austrian Levant. Signed G. Bolaffi, A. Bolaffi Ferchenbauer = € 15'000. rnNote: After October 1866, the Levant rate was unified to 15 soldi, thus the present item is underpaid by 5 soldi. In addition a so called 'zutaxe' was introduced like in Austria itself. The present cover was therefore taxed with 5 soldi due and 5 soldi zutaxe and the resulting 10 soldi were noted in blue crayon. However at some point or another the zutaxe was waived and the receiver had to pay only the five soldi missing.rnReference: A cover from the same correspondence but with the correct Lloyd rate is displayed and described in the Ferchenbauer handbook, part IV on page 588.
