Lot# : 6020 DDSG
Danube Steam Navigation Co in Smyrna 1844c: Second page of entire letter from Smyrna to Constantinople with a fine strike of the framed "D.D.S.G. / P.P. / SMYRNE" handstamp in black (Tranmer fig. 22). The cover shows two carantine slits. Some wear of no importance, an extremely rare postmark.rnNote: In 1829, the Donau-Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschft (DDSG) was founded. It supplied postal services on the Danube as well as on the Black and Aegean Sea. In 1845, the DDSG services were restricted to the Danube and Odessa. The shipmail service along the Aegean coast of Asia Minor never worked satisfactorily resulting in a low number of surviving covers with the two known types of prephilatelic Smyrna DDSG PP handstamps. Another cover is depicted in Smith - Austrian Post Offices in the Levant on p. 157.rnReference: Cover displayed in Ringström & Tester - Private Ship Letter Stamps of the World, part 22 on p. 71. rnProvenance: Collection Franz See; Corinphila sale 62 (May 1979), lot 2523.Starting bid : 1,000 CHFHammer price : 1,500 CHF
