    1856/62: 5 c. rose-red, a used example, slightly shaved at left, used on 1864 cover from Valparaiso to Bordeaux endorsed "Por el Vapor Paita", with Valparaiso despatch cds in red (Nov 22). Reverse with Lima transit cds (Nov 28) and the letter held in Lima until the Spanish blockade of Callao was lifted and then struck with British P.O. cds (Feb 13, 1865) in black. Thence via Panama and London (March 16) where struck with 'GB / 2F 87½c.' accountancy marking. Bordeaux arrival (March 18) on reverse. A rare example of mail interrupted by these hostilities.rnrnNote: The 'Guano' War or Chincha Islands War, was a series of coastal and naval battles between Spain and its former colonies of Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Bolivia from 1865 to 1866. Even before Chile and Peru were formally allied, Spain had suffered a humiliating naval defeat at the naval Battle of Papudo on November 26, 1865 where the Chilean corvette Esmeralda captured the Spanish schooner Covadonga, taking the crew prisoner and seizing the admiral's war correspondence. Peru declared war on Spain on January 12, 1866.
