  • Lot# : 4562 Great Britain

    1 / 1
1840: 2 d. blue, Plate 1, lettered MH/NH, a used vertical pair with large even margins all round, on 1841 cover, no seal or side flaps, probably mailed from Dublin or Belfast and endorsed "pr. Athlone" (a Paddle Steamer and later an 'emigrant' ship and not the regular Packet) to Liverpool, tied by Maltese Crosses in red. Reverse with circular SHIP LETTER / Crown / LIVERPOOL datestamp (Jan 24, 1841) in black. An extremely rare Maritime usage: the Karl Louis Card Index records just three covers bearing imperforates from the Richardson Brothers correspondence to Liverpool with incoming Ship Letter markings, one with a 1 d. black, another with an 1840 2 d. blue and this cover with a 2 d. pair. Signed Calves. Cert. BPA (2020).rnNote: The "Athlone" (built 1836), was a City fo Dublin Steam Packet Company" ship serving cross-charrelroutes between Britain and Irland including transporting mail. Starting in 1822 between Dublin and Liverpool, the C.O.D.S.P. Comp. added service in 1826 to London and Belfast.rnrn
