    Plymouth 1840: 1 d. black, Plate 5, lettered CL, a used example with large margins all round and small portion of adjoining stamp at left, used on 1841 entire letter to an artist, Mr. Apie, in St. Agnes, Cornwall, tied by neat strike of the distinctive PLYMOUTH Maltese Cross in black. Plymouth despatch cds (Feb 23) displaying well on reverse and double arc "Truro" cds on front in blue when the letter was forwarded on to St. Ives. A superb and exceptional entire, the earliest recorded with the Plymouth Cross by Rockoff & Jackson (see volume 2, pages 225-226) where this cover is illustrated; also shown in Alcock & Holland on page 61. Very rare, an exhibition item of the highest calibre Gi A1uc = £ 9'000.rnNote: The letter concerns a request for a Portrait to be painted by Mr. Apie of the President of the Natural History Society, one Colonel Smith, for which the artist would receive 15 guineas upon completion.
