Lot# 375 - Auction 265-273

  • Lot# : 375 Great Britain

Crimean War 1855: Cover to Clapham Common, London endorsed "Crimea 8 Jan 55" and "French Packet via Marseilles", franked by 1854 1 d. red-brown, perf. 16 and 2 d. blue, pl. 4, perf. 16 tied on arrival with London '48' numeral obliterators with London arrival cds (Jan 24) on reverse. A fine and scarce cover with fascinating content (only the PS unfortunately) "The returns show that we have upwards of 12'000 sick in the English Army alone! The 23rd have 147 sick at present with the Regt. and we know not how many at Scutari...England has no Troops to replace them, Ministers seem to think that it is sufficient to give a man a Shilling, put a red coat on his back and a musket in his hand and there they have a soldier. We know better. No soldiers under three or four years service is fit for this work. The militia would be better than recruits because they are generally older. I really begin to doubt whether Sebastopol can be taken with our means".
