  • Lot# : 5220 France

1867: Envelope with an insured value of 1'500 francs from Vienne to Elbeuf, bearing Napoléon laureated 30 c. brown in a horizontal pair, a fine multiple with vibrant colour and good perforation, tied by crisp Petits Chiffres du Gros Chiffres '4199' numeral lozenge, clear despatch cds (Feb. 9, 1870) and CHARGÉ in red alongside. Reverse with timbre indicatif de chargement, ambulant and arrival cds's of the next day. Some folds and some corner wear not affecting stamps and postmarks, an interesting and rare usage.rnrnNote: In the value letter rate of July 1859, in use until May 1870, postage and a fixed rate of 20 centimes were franked with stamps, leading to the 60 c. franking for this double rate item. The insured value fee of 10 c. for each 100 fr. insured, in this case 150 c., could be paid in cash, a procedure which was changed for the June 1870 tariff.
