Lot# 3481 - Auction 257-264

  • Lot# : 3481 Guatemala

1871 (March 1): 1 c. ochre on buff, a horizontal pair and a horizontal strip of four used on 1875 entire letter from Guatemala City to Coban, one stamp with small fault at top, all tied by extremely rare usage of the "Guatemala" cds (March 6) in black, with "Correos de Guatemala / Paquetes" cds in red below (March 10) and carried by Steamer. The 1 centavo value had run out / stocks had been lost by the end of January 1872 - the reason why 1 c. values are so rare with this datestamp which was introduced only in 1874. Unrecorded in the Goodman census, with this being the sole example recorded thus, this being mailed during the 5 centavos rate period. Central file fold does not detract from the fine appearance of an extremely rare, unique entire. Signed Holcombe.rnProvenance: Corinphila sale 72, Sept 1985, lot 1802; Collection Mark Spycher, Nov 2008.
