International Postal Connections to Europe - Greece 1865 (Sept 30): Partially prepaid entire letter from Prevesa in Epirus to Kerkyra, Corfu, bearing 1863 Arms 2 s. yellow, two examples perf. 14, in mixed franking with 1864 5 s. rose, perf. 9½, tied by crisp "PREVESA 30/9" cds's in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 516). Reverse with Kerkyra arrival cds (Sept 19, 1865). Upon arrival, the cover was taxed at double rate with '40' lepta in red crayon and a Large Hermes Head definitive 40 lepta mauve with ample to large margins was added and tied by the same datestamp. The cover was slitted for disinfection in a way not affecting the franking, some soiling and a slight file fold through one of the 2 soldi stamps, but still an attractive cover full of character. Illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 432 and in the Ferchenbauer handbook part IV on page 587. Cert. E. Diena (1994).rnNote: This cover demonstrates the special 9 soldi rate between neighbouring Ports with a Lloyd Agency, known for covers between Prevesa and Corfu, Lagos and Cavalla as well as the Dardanelles and Constantinopel. This item was at single rate in the Lloyd postal sytem, but at double rate in the Greek postal system due to the disparity between the Ounce against the Metric system (16.6 gr. in Austria versus 15 gr.).
