International Postal Connections to Europe - France 1875 (Nov 9): Registered cover at double rate from Constantinople to Trevoux, franked on front with 1867 coarse whiskers 3 s. green in a horizontal pair, 10 s. blue, two examples and a vertical strip of three, and 25 s. lilac (2) tied by "CONSTANTINOPEL 9/11 75" cds in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 390). "P.D." in black and French entry cds in blue and Austrian and French registration handstamps alongside. Reverse with Paris-Lyon TPO transit and Trevoux arrival cds (Nov 15). Cover in tatty condition with folds and tears, but one of very few registered pre-UPU items to France, illustrated and discussed in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 406 and in the Ferchenbauer handbook part IV on page 559. rnNote: Although despatched after the GPU rates came into force in the Austrian Levant on July 1, 1875, this cover was franked according to the previous bilateral postal treaty between Austria and France, as France did not join the UPU until January 1, 1876. The rate includes twice 35 soldi for the double rate postage from the Levant to France as well as twice the French registration fee of 13 soldi and 10 soldi Austrian registration fee, in total 106 soldi. An extraordinary cover as registered mail to France is extremely rare due to the enormous postage fees charged.
