An attractive and interesting item, illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 376. Signed Sorani, Todd AIEP. Cert. Puschmann (1993).rnProvenance: Collection 'Monte Napoleone', Corinphila sale 78, Oct. 1988, lot 774.rnrnNote: Austria did not have direct postal treaties with the Ottoman Empire and Egypt. In these cases, postal items could be prepaid only to the Port, in this case Alexandria, the rest of the journey had to be paid by the receiver. This cover was sent after the unification of the Austrian rates in January 1866 but this had no impact on the amount due as the Levant rates were not yet unified (October 1866) and the recipient had to pay the old charge of 15 instead of 10 kreuzer.
