    Expansion at Sea 1822 (Jan. 10): Entire letter from Venice to Corfu, endorsed "Col. Cap: Francesco Davanzo", struck with circular "ISOLE IONIE" handstamp in bluish green. Illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 209. rnNote: Corfu and the Ionian Islands constituted the 'United States of the Ionian Islands' under British protection after the Napoleonic Wars. In June 1819 the Austrian government established a regular shipmail service, first between Trieste and Corfu, in 1833 extended to Patras and from 1834 up to Alexandria. Prior to the foundation of the DDSG in 1829 the service was performed using private ships.
