1857 (March 6): Autographed Letter Sheet signed at foot by Rowland Hill, written on embossed Post Office notepaper to Pliny Miles (1818-1865) an American Postal reformer whose grand idea was a 1 cent rate over any distance in the USA, part of the letter with outstanding content on the Transatlantic Route - "When I receive your pamphlet on Ocean Steam Navigation I shall peruse with much interest your remarks on the existing high rates of postage between this country and America, but I cannot for a moment acknowledge that any blame attaches to this Office. We proposed some months since to reduce the rate, and the measure is now under the consideration of the United States Post Office. I remain, Yours truly, Rowland Hill". A rare and fascinating letter.rnRemark: An ideal addition to the "Congressional Mulready" for presentation to the United States Senate in conjunction with Daniel Webster's resolution dated 10 June 1840 relative to a reduction of the postage on letters
