Lot# : 6136 Natal
1874: 6 d. reddish violet, wmk. Crown, perf. 14, a fine example used on combination cover from Pilgrim's Rest, Transvaal to London, overlapping Transvaal 1875 Celliers printing 6 d. deep blue (Gi 63), just touched at top cancelled by faint '14' numeral. Both stamps tied by numeral "1" in bars of Pietermaritzburg and by circular "London" (Dec 11) arrival cds in red. Reverse with 'G.P.O. / Natal' cds in black (Oct 24) and 'Durban / Crown / Natal' cds (Nov 1). The Natal 6 d. lifted for checking and hinged back into place. Cover #105 in the Jorgensen Transvaal census. An extremely rare combination usage from Transvaal through Natal, largely found only on this small correspondence addressed to Alcock in Holloway. rnrnNote: The Alcock correspondence is almost the only one using the 'Natal Route' back to the UK on the 'Donald Currie' Line of Steamers. Many of the Alcock covers are damaged, for example the two in the Bill Hart collection, the one offered here is particularly fine for this correspondence.Starting bid : 2,000 CHFHammer price : 3,400 CHF
